Joan Kernochan Fitzgerald, of the Town of Newburgh, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the Elant Residential Center in Newburgh. She was 80.
The daughter of the late William and Cora Murray Kernochan, Joan was born January 16, 1933 in Newburgh.
Joan was a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's High School and the Spencer Business Institute. She worked for Central Hudson for 23 years before marrying her husband, John in 1973.
Until her recent illness, she continued working at the Town of Newburgh Tax Office, first for Betty Greene and later for Mary Lou Venuto. Joan's love of people, especially children, was legendary. Before marrying and having two children of her own, she practically adopted the children of Dom and Anne Revelle and the young one's of Frank and Fina Catania. Joan also had a special relationship with the children of Don and Anne Mayer.
Wherever she went, Joan made friends because of her warm personality. Over the years she stayed in touch with her high school classmates and many employees of Central Hudson. She had many friends among the religious community, especially the Oblate priests of Mary Immaculate and the Dominican sisters, from whom she learned so much about human kindness. Joan gave her love away for free and love came back to her a hundred fold.
Survivors include her husband of 40 years, John A. Fitzgerald, her children Mary Beth Ryan and Thomas Fitzgerald, her son-in-law, Mike Ryan Jr., grandchildren: Shaun and Emma Ryan, step grandchild, Madison Ryan, sisters-in-law, Patricia Fitzgerald and Katherine Fitzgerald, brother-in-law, John Rueckert, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her special childhood friends, Anne Mayer, Florence Avery Lambert and Mebbie Bryne Kretz were faithful and comforting to Joan throughout her life and especially during her battle with cancer, as well as her long time friend and confidant Fina Catania.
Visitation for family and friends will take place Sunday, September 8th from 2-8 p.m. at White & Venuto Funeral Home, 188 North Plank Rd. (Rte 32), Newburgh, NY.
A Funeral Mass will be offered 10 a.m., Monday, September 9th at The Church of Saint Mary, 180 South Street, Newburgh, NY. Burial to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Rt. 9W, Newburgh.
