Our father passed on August 26, 2014. Fred was born in Abington, Pa on January 23, 1933. The youngest son of Robert McCurdy and Ruth Whitaker, he is survived by two of his three older brothers.
He was not a well known public figure, but those of us who knew him loved and respected him immensely. When asked about what he did for work, his cheerful reply would be, "I never worked a day in my life!" He loved what he did, and worked tirelessly and without malice. Whether it was as a landlord, as President of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, a board member of the Newburgh YWCA, working on getting the pool built at Newburgh Free Academy, a trustee of Mount St. Mary College, a board member of the Holden Home, a Newburgh Rotarian, a founding member of the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, he was at his best when solving problems and seeing these endeavors grow and thrive. He did good things because there were good things to do.
His most successful community contribution is GTI Graphic Technology, Inc., a manufacturing business he started in 1975. Located in the city of Newburgh with 33 employees, GTI ships products for quality color viewing all over the world, and has provided him and his wife Betsy with the opportunity to travel to far and away places, and to make friends in many countries. Graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts College where he met his wife Elizabeth Griffiths (Betsy), he and his young family arrived in Newburgh in 1957 following a stint as a navigator in the Air Force from Cape Cod, Mass. to work in sales at Macbeth Corporation. He was an amazing optimist.
Of course, we were lucky to have this energetic man as our dad. He motivated us in clever ways, and was always helpful and never intrusive. He and Betsy raised four successful children, Rick, of Newburgh, Bill (Mary), of Weston, Mass., Bob (Ginny), of Newburgh, and Nancy (Jean Pierre Marjollet), of Hingham, Mass. They have 13 grandchildren with the last two heading off to college this year.
A celebration of Fred's life will take place Thursday, August 28th from 4 to 7 p.m. at White & Venuto Funeral Home, 188 North Plank Rd., Newburgh, NY.
In lieu of flowers please make donations in Fred's memory to the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, PO Box 10002, Newburgh, NY 12552.
