Obituary

Robert A. Kunkel of the Town of Newburgh, a retired Director of Purchasing for the County of Orange peacefully entered into rest after a long illness Monday, March 9, 2015 at Wingate at Beacon. He was 85.

The son of the late William and Helen Harbert Kunkel, Robert was born March 20, 1929 in Duquesne, Pennsylvania.

Robert was a member of the Town of Newburgh Republican Committee from 1969 to 1978, was on Newburgh Town Council for fourteen years, in 1993 he rejoined the Committee, served as Supervisor for the Town of Newburgh from 1990 to 1993, was voted as "Republican of the Year" in 1996.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Town of Newburgh American Legion Post #1420, VFW Post #1161, Balmville Grange #982 and the UCT #414. Robert was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. Above all Robert always put his family first.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Bonura Kunkel at home, children: Darlene M. Skibitsky of Newburgh, Diane M. Terotta of Wallkill, Rosalie Chiarella of Newburgh, Mary Lena Mesquita of Walden , Robert W.F. Kunkel of Newburgh, brother, William Kunkel of Greenville, PA, twelve grandchildren: Sommer McEnry, Diana Talerico, James Terotta, Jennifer Skibitsky, Michael Skibitsky, Antonio Mesquita, Andrew Mesquita, Mary Lena Grace Mesquita, Priscilla Mesquita, Christopher Chiarella, Amanda Kunkel and Robert Kunkel Jr., and one great granddaughter, Morgan McEnry, as well as nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by his sister, Judy Hobbs, son-in-law, Steven Skibitsky and grandson, Johnnie Mesquita.

Visitation will be private.

Funeral Mass will be offered, 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2015 at St. Patrick's Church, 55 Grand St., in Newburgh to which family and friends are invited. Cremation will follow the Mass at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Burial will be held at a future date at the Orange County VA Cemetery in Goshen.
