Helen Bachman of the Town of Newburgh, a retired school teacher for East Coldenham Elementary School entered into rest, Sunday, December 20, 2015 at home. She was 92.
The daughter of the late Daniel J. and Mary Elizabeth (Bohrer) Donohue, Helen was born in Glen Falls, N.Y. on May 27, 1923.
She attended St. Mary's Academy in Glen Falls, NY and Plattsburgh Teachers College. Helen married Walter L. Bachman in January 1950.
Helen taught grades one thru three ending up in first grade for the majority of her career at East Coldenham Elementary School. She retired in 1985 after 27 years of teaching. Helen traveled extensively after her retirement and was involved in Literacy Volunteers, and the Montgomery Food Pantry. She also was a CCD teacher for 1st grade Catholic students and tutored children in reading at her home.
During her illness, Helen was blessed to have wonderful caregivers: Norma, Brenda, Carol, Chantel and Mea who provided her the utmost love, care and compassion. She was able to remain in her home surrounded each day by love due to the care these women provided her. Her family (children) will be forever grateful to each of them, also, the Hospice nurses: Lynn, Liz, Tina, Chaplain Gary Marshall, Cheryl, her special volunteer, Dr. Dinsmore and Dr. Harvinder Chaudhry and staff.
Her life was filled with love, joy and service to others. She touched the lives of many children. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A family statement reads "Mom had a heart of gold, always willing to lend a helping hand."
Helen is survived by her daughter, Ellen Hall and husband, Dale of New Kent, VA; son, Gerald Bachman of Dallas, TX and her youngest daughter, Nancy Winter and husband, William of Fishkill, NY. In addition to her husband Walter, she is predeceased by her sister, Mary Powers, two brothers, Daniel and Edward Donohue and their wives, Gertrude and Helen; two nephews, Michael Powers, William Donohue and her niece's husband, Alan Sexton.
Visitation for family and friends will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 29th at White & Venuto Funeral Home, 188 North Plank Rd. (Route 32) Newburgh, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 30th at Most Precious Blood Parish, 42 Walnut Street, Walden, NY. Cremation will follow the Mass at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family at St. Mary's Cemetery in Glen Falls, NY.
